February 2009
Hey Second Cinema fans….we have a great show to start off the new year!
First off we were back at our home away from home, The Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham. And speaking of the Carolina Theatre, please remember that the Nevermore Film Festival will be in town February 20-22nd. Check out our Nevermore Preview.
To start the show off this month we had the chance to sit down with Co-Chair for the newly named, Hayti Heritage Film Festival, Angela Ray. Angela shares information about the upcoming festival taking place in Durham, the history behind it, and what’s in store for those in attendance. The Hayti Heritage Film Festival will take place February 19-22, 2009.
The annual Hayti Heritage Film Festival (HHFF), formerly known as the Black Diaspora Film Festival is celebrating 15 years of existence. The 2009 festival, being held February 19-22, will be totally spearheaded by three dynamic women with years of experience in the performing arts community.
Enjoy our interview below and to find out more information about the festival, you can visit them online.
Next we had a chance to explore the films of the upcoming Nevermore Film Festival. The festival will take place the weekend of February 20-22nd at the Carolina Theatre. For more info, check out the clip below and visit their website for more info on the films and screenings.
Next up on this month’s show we got a sneak peak at an upcoming feature on Second Cinema. Nick Karner of Prank Films took the time out to share with us a little knowledge on the classic, Night of the Hunter. This was a first for Second Cinema, to have a viewer, submitter, and friend, review another film, but Nick’s so knowledgeable about films in general that we had to ask him to contribute. Nick will continue to submit film reviews, not only because he’s got the knowledge, but because he’s just so damn entertaining. Check out the first of many below.
Following the break, Hilary sits down with George Sartiano from The School of Communication Arts. He covers various topics about the film industry here in the Carolinas, talks about his background in the film industry and his ties to North Carolina, and if that’s not enough, George decides to bring along a film to share. One of the school’s student films entitled “Crash Course” gets screened and if you like visual effects, you’re in for a real treat. Below is our interview with George Sartiano.
It was an action packed episode this month and we appreciate your support of North Carolina filmmmakers. Remember that Second Cinema airs state wide and to find out where we air in your neck of the woods, check out our Times and Location page.
Until next month, remember…
We have too many intellectuals who are afraid to use the pistol of common sense.

June 2008
We had the great pleasure of sitting down with Joe Schenkenberg, the bottlecap master, this month to discuss the forgotten art of the bottlecap shot and his latest film Bottlecap Assassins.
If you like action, humor, and great special effects, than Bottlecap Assassins is the film for you. Joe says it’s “Kill Bill shoot’em up meets kind of a mafiaesque movie” that provides, “a lot of action, a little blood shed, and a lot of fun”. What more could you want!
Below is the entertaining interview with Joe.
Below are a few screen captures from the film, but check out the whole film below.
Enjoy Bottlecap Assassins:
Please visit Joe’s website, joeyshanks.org, for more about Joe, his production company, and his films.
After Bottlecap Assassins, we screened the short film, Dog Te Ching, by John Fitch III. It’s short, but packs a mystical punch.
We then screened the film, The Clock Shop, the latest documentary from our friends Bill Judge and Bodhi Leaf Productions. “
This short piece gives an inside look into the work of Steve Brown one the few remaining and finest clock repairman in the business.” If you would like to get in touch with Mr. Judge, you can visit the website, Bodhi Leaf Productions , or by email at bodhi@bodhileafproductions.com
Thanks to everyone who participated in the show this month. We hope you enjoyed the show. Stay tuned, there may be an awards show in the future. hint hint.
May 2008
This month we headed back to The Carolina Theatre for two outstanding interviews, Mr. Aaron Syrett, of the NC Film Commission, and Nic Beery of Beery Media and we screened Nic’s short film entitled, Nightlife.
We first had the pleasure to sit down with North Carolina Film Commission Director, Aaron Syrett. He talked about film opportunities in the state, explained what his department does, and how you can get involved. Watch the interview below or click on the VodPod clip to the right to watch BONUS footage from the interview not seen on the show, in which Mr. Syrett discusses the NEW NC Film Data Base.
After sitting down with Mr. Syrett, we spoke with our friend Nic Beery of Beery Media.
We screened the trailer for The Mad Tea Party Documentary: Post-Modern Parlor Music during our first break. When we returned, we spoke with Nic about the film and how he will be releasing the film in ten minute chunks via YouTube.
The First in the installment is listed below, but enjoy them all here.
For the remainder of the show we focused our attention to his short film Nightlife, which we screened in it’s entirety. Watch the Nic Beery Interview below, and make sure to check the VodPod panel for bonus Beery footage!
NIGHTLIFE
NightLife takes a look at a day in the life of a woman named Medea who doesn’t know where to find love. We begin just as she has run out of gas and must walk to the nearest station. As the afternoon rolls into night, things go from bad to worse and we discover more about how Medea got into this situation.
NightLife is a 12 minute short shot in High Definition that is circling the Festival circuit throughout 2008.
The cast includes Melissa Lozoff, Mike Harris, Kelly Davis and Selena Lauterer.
